Trauma Treatment and Recovery
Trauma treatment therapy is a relatively new area of study in the United States. The traditional view of diagnosis in this area of mental health continues to be challenged as new ideas emerge.
Trauma is defined as “the real or perceived threat of harm or loss of integrity to self or those close to you.”, and “the loss of connection, safety and security”. The symptoms of trauma can be described as “a normal reaction to an abnormal experience”.
Trauma changes the chemistry of the brain in such a way that the brain’s natural protective response overwhelms the logical, decision making part of the brain. The physical symptoms that accompany this process can cause great emotional distress. They include: heart palpitations, difficulty concentrating or making decisions, stomach disturbance, unfocused thinking or “day dreaming”, sleep disturbance, nightmares, agitation, excessive fear and worry, vigilance, emotional turbulence and avoidance of activities.
In my work with clients, both US born and refugee, I use a variety of treatment modalities including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, Mind Body Integration Therapy, and Energy Psychology Therapy. These body centered models help clients develop control over their somatic symptoms and strengthen their affect regulation.
